April 7, 2019: Brick Wall

Barbara has been my biggest brick wall, but there are others as well.  The one I am currently working on is “what happened to my grandfather’s siblings?  I remember my dad talking about his mother’s family: many stories about Aunt Vicky, Aunt Mary, and Uncle Joe.  But I don’t recall any stories about his dad’s family.  Grandpa Frank was born in Detroit in 1875.  I know his sister Mary was 8 years older than he was and probably born in Poland.  Dad did say two of Franks brothers changed their names due to prejudice.  Martin became Burke, and Chestly/Chester became Oblin.  So that was it, two of his uncles changed their name.  No more stories.

The 1880 census lists two children; Mary 12 and Frank 4.  The 1900 census lists Frank 25, Mary 15, Eva 9 and Mickey 7.  It stated their mother had 13 children, 6 living.
This is what I have found so far; Rose 1896-1896, Annie 1880-1986, Eva 1889-1949, Chester was alive in 1949 – his is listed in Eva’s obit, As was Martin.  They were both listed as Joblinski.  I did cross reference Martin as a Joblinski and a Burke.

So, I have 13 children.   The six alive in 1900 would have been Frank, Eva, Martin, Chestly, and Stanley and one more.

Maryanne 1868
Frank 1875-1937
John 1876-1880
Annie 1880-1896
Peter 1885?
Eva 1889 or 1890-1949
Michael or Mickey 1892
Stanley 1893-1979?
Maryan 1894
Martin 1894
Rose 1896-1896
Chestly or Chester
Catherine

I have records for several of the siblings, but with limited information.  At least not enough information for me to be sure they are the right records.  Questions too.  Did Maryan change his name to Martin? His draft card listed Maryan.  One record said my GGM had 15 children.
GGM was on a ship from Poland with Marianna age 4 and Michael age 2 months.    Arrived in NYC in May 1875.  Frank was born in American in October 1875. So, in the 1900 Census showing Mary 12 and Frank 4, what happened to Michael, and was there a Mary and a Marianna.  And where was her husband?  No ship manifest for him found yet.  Did he go first, then send for the family?  Hopefully I will find the answers one day.
