June 13, 2019 Nature
I come from a long line of farmers, on both sides of my family. I grew up with barnyards, full of
animals. There were, at one time or
another: horses, cows, pigs, goats, turkeys, chickens, geese, ducks, and rabbits. There were always cats and dogs There was
also an assortment of non-domestic animals that came and went. I picked field corn when it was just ripening
and ate it raw, I chewed on soybeans from the gravity wagon, wandered the
fields and woods, and waded in the creek.
I wasn’t afraid of bugs. I can remember picking “blood suckers” off my
legs and finding all sorts of bugs and insects in the yard and garden. They were not scary. The peepers heralded spring, fireflies were a
summer delight, and the wild geese honking overheard brought autumn.
I feel sorry for the kids who will never know that
freedom.
